Parce que les enfants d'un élément choice représentent tous des moyens possibles d'encoder la même séquence, il est naturel de les envisager comme exclusifs les uns des autres. Toutefois il peut y avoir des cas où la pleine représentation d'un texte requiert de considérer ces encodages alternatifs comme parallèles.
